Harmonicas

My top harmonicas

Diatonic Harmonicas in the Key of C (over 50$)

  • Hohner Special 20 – This is my go to harmonica, great for beginners, best for bending and general playing ease.
  • Hohner Golden Melody – My first harmonica, great for single note playing, most comfortable.
  • Lee Oskar Harmonica – Similar to Special 20, may be easier for single note playing, durable.

Additional useful keys:

These keys come up frequently as you progress, especially when playing with other musicians or backing tracks. If you want to play along with your favorite song you can look up the key online or reach out to me for a recommendation. I use the following keys quite often.

Key of A, Key of D, Key of E, Key of G

Budget Option for all keys: Fender Blues Harp

If you’re building out a larger set of harmonicas and don’t want to spend full price on every key, the Fender Blues Harp is a solid, inexpensive option. I use a bunch of these as my backups but have recommended for those who just want to try for the first time. Good option for beginners playing in 1st position.

  • Typically around $15.00
  • Perfectly fine for keys you don’t use as often.
  • Not as responsive or refined as the Special 20, but very usable. I can get a decent bend on these harmonicas.

This is a good way to expand your collection without overspending.

Recommended Accessory: Ultrasonic Harmonica Cleaner

Keeping your harmonica clean makes a noticeable difference in response, tone, and longevity.

I use a small ultrasonic cleaner (similar to what’s used for jewelry). It does a great job removing buildup that’s hard to clean by hand.

  • Simple to use
  • Helps prevent stuck reeds
  • Extends the life of your harmonicas

I usually add one drop of dishwashing liquid. Cleaning solutions are available, but not necessary.
